Luo Ning was born in a family of music in China and grew up in the multiracial province Xinjiang with much ethnic customs. In the year when Luo Ning was 4 years old, his father discovered Luo Ning’s talents in music and become the piano abecedarian of Luo Ning. That is how Luo Ning started his journey of music.
现在他已是中国最出色的JAZZ 钢琴演奏家之一，在JAZZ 钢琴和古典音乐上都有自己独特的理解和演绎，并以演奏技术精湛、热情洋溢著称。1998 年以来，罗宁一直活跃在国内、国际的JAZZ、古典等舞台上，并与JAZZ音乐大师Kenny Garrete，Jens Winther等众多JAZZ音乐家有过合作、交流。
He is now one of the most excellent pianists of JAZZ in Beijing. He has his own unique understanding and expression on JAZZ piano and classical music, and he is famous for his consummate playing skill and ebullience and enthusiasm. Since 1998, Luo Ning has frequently played in domestic and international stage of JAZZ, classical, popular or folk music, and he ever worked with JAZZ musician KENNY GARRETE, JENS WINTHER and so on.
Dating back to 1976, the young Luo Ning received the guidance by Chen Taojin from Hong Kong, who is also a returning overseas Chinese pianist, and he learned music theory, theory and phonics from Professor Ma Hui and associate Professor Wang Qingsheng in Xinjiang Arts College. During that time, he was exempted in the course of solfeggio for his excellent aural comprehension. After that, he learned romantic piano from Steven Reeze, the pianist teacher of British Royal Institute of Music. In 1991, Luo Ning passed the entrance exam and entered Art Troupe Of Xinjiang military area as the piano player of the band of the troupe. He came to Beijing at the end of 1996.
一次偶然的机会，结识了萨克斯管教育家、演奏家陆庭荃老师，那段时间里，罗宁在陆庭荃老师的JAZZ乐队里学习和实践演奏JAZZ钢琴。
It is in an accidental chance that Luo Ning was acquainted with the Saxohone educator and player Lu Tingquan and cognized JAZZ music under his guidance. Within that period, Luo Ning was learning and practicing JAZZ music in Lu Tingquan’s JAZZ band. During the time, he participated in many big shows
2001年4月罗宁加入刘元爵士乐队，2009年组建自己的乐队“罗宁拉丁爵士乐队”。他先后在美国伯克利音乐学院及纽约学习深造，为了探寻爵士音乐艺术的精髓，他远赴拉丁爵士乐的发源地，在古巴高等艺术学院深造，师从Roberto Fonseca及Bellita，受世界级拉丁爵士钢琴大师Chucho Valdes亲自指导。同时，古巴人“音乐即生活”的生活态度也深刻地影响了他，给予了他最宝贵的艺术滋养。罗宁将拉丁爵士律动与个人的音乐思考相融合，创作出极具个人风格和富有思想性的爵士乐作品，这让他成为拉丁爵士乐在中国的象征。
In April 2001, Luo Ning joined the Liu Yuan's jazz band, and in 2009, he formed his band, the 'Luo Ning Latin Jazz Band.' He furthered his studies at the Berklee College of Music and New York to explore the essence of jazz music, he once traveled to Cuba, the birthplace of Latin jazz, to further his studies at the Higher Institute of Art in Cuba, and received personal guidance from world-renowned Latin jazz piano master Chucho Valdes. At that time, the Cuban attitude of 'music is life' deeply influenced him, providing him with the most precious artistic nourishment. Luo Ning integrates Latin jazz rhythms with his musical reflections, creating jazz works that are highly individualistic and thought-provoking. This has made him a symbol of Latin jazz in China.
罗宁是早期被公认的中国最知名爵士钢琴家之一，他以独特的东方气质，精湛的技艺被西方音乐人誉为“东方爵士钢琴诗人”。罗宁在不同文化间游走，积累的音乐感悟可谓包罗万象，由此，他的音乐风格横跨古典音乐、传统爵士、拉丁爵士、融合爵士，以其精湛的演奏技艺和天赋的创作才华，将中国元素、民族音乐与西方爵士乐相融合，沉淀升华，形成了极具东方意境的个人爵士音乐风格，让世界乐迷领略到中国爵士的韵味和魅力。世界著名美国爵士音乐大师Kenny Garrett称他为“真正的中国爵士钢琴家”。
Luo Ning is recognized as one of the most renowned early Chinese jazz pianists. He is acclaimed by Western musicians as the 'Oriental Jazz Piano Poet' for his unique Eastern charm and exquisite skills. Luo Ning traverses different cultures, accumulating a vast array of musical insights. Consequently, his musical style spans classical music, traditional jazz, Latin jazz, and fusion jazz. With his superb performance skills and innate creative talent, he integrates Chinese elements and ethnic music with Western jazz, refining and elevating them to form a personal jazz style rich in Eastern ambiance. This allows global music enthusiasts to appreciate the flavor and allure of Chinese jazz. World-renowned American jazz master Kenny Garrett calls him 'a real Chinese jazz pianist.'
罗宁长期致力于爵士音乐的普及教育、传播和发展，是文化部特派代表中国出访南非、法国、土耳其、韩国等世界各国演出交流最多的爵士钢琴家，也是第29届北京奥运会特邀音乐家。他受众多中国著名学府邀请举办大师课及展演，包括中央音乐学院、四川音乐学院、西安音乐学院、天津音乐学院、中国人民大学、新疆教育学院、澳门科技大学艺术大讲堂、青海师范大学音乐学院、CC讲坛，担任珠海现代音乐(CMI)爵士钢琴专业大师班客座教授等。受邀参加亚洲爵士研讨会与亚洲各国爵士节创办人、音乐节总导演等业内知名人士共同探讨推广和发展亚洲爵士乐。参加中国-中东欧国家艺术合作论坛现场音乐会。担任雅马哈钢琴比赛评委，清华大学校歌赛评委，北京现代音乐研修学院爵士乐学院第十二届“佩里扎罗奖学金”大赛评委 。
Luo Ning has long been committed to popularizing, educating, disseminating, and developing jazz music. Appointed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, Luo Ning had performed at many festivals overseas as a Chinese musician representative. He is the jazz pianist who has represented China the most in international performances and exchanges, such as South Africa, France, Turkey, and South Korea. He was also an invited musician for the 29th Beijing Olympic Games. Numerous prestigious Chinese institutions have invited him to hold master classes and performances, including the Central Conservatory of Music, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Xi'an Conservatory of Music, Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Renmin University of China, Xinjiang Education Institute, Macau University of Science and Technology Art Lecture Hall, Qinghai Normal University Music College, CC Forum, and served as a guest professor for the Jazz Piano Master Class at Contemporaty Music Institute (CMI). He was invited to participate in the Asian Jazz Discussion Panel and developing Asian jazz with founders of jazz festivals and music festival directors from various Asian countries. He participated in the live concert of the China-Central and Eastern European Countries Art Cooperation Forum. He was a judge for the Yamaha Piano Competition and the Tsinghua University School Song Competition. The judge of the 12th "Perizaro Scholarship" Competition of the Jazz School of Beijing Contemporary Music Academy.
2012年原创爵士专辑《未知的旅行》荣获广东省音乐家协会颁发的“年度最佳爵士乐专辑奖”；2013年第十三届华语音乐传媒大奖最佳爵士/蓝调艺人、最佳器乐专辑提名。
In 2012, the original jazz album 'Unknown Journey' won the '2012 Jazz Album of the Year' award by the Guangdong Musicians Association and was nominated for Best Jazz/Blues Artist and Best Instrumental Album at the 13th Chinese Music Media Awards in 2013.
2019年，罗宁的原创爵士专辑《光与影的邂逅》入围第30届金曲奖--演奏类最佳作曲人奖；中国第三届CMA唱工委--最佳爵士演奏专辑奖；2020年全球华人音乐殿堂第十一届华语金曲奖年度最佳爵士/蓝调艺人奖。
In 2019, Luo Ning's original jazz album 'When Light & Shadow Meet' was shortlisted for the “best composer award under performance category” of the 30th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan. It also won the Best Jazz Instrumental Album at the 3rd CMA Awards (China Music Industry Committee Music Awards ) in China, and the "Best Jazz/Blues Artist Award" of the 11th Chinese Music Awards in 2020.
2019年获中国文化和旅游部举办的中国第六届丝绸之路国际艺术节的“丝路贡献奖”。
In 2019, he was awarded the Silk Road Contribution Award at the 6th Silk Road International Arts Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China.
2023年与广州交响乐团合作录制的最新专辑《蓝色狂想曲（Rhapsody in Blue）》，是罗宁对爵士乐20多年的深刻理解和审美沉淀，凝聚成对乔治·格什温《蓝色狂想曲》百年致敬之作的特别演绎。在这张专辑中，罗宁融入更多现代爵士的表现手法来重新演绎这部作品，加入了印象主义曲风，以及自由爵士（Free Jazz）、爵士布鲁斯（Jazz Blues）、比波普（Bebop）、叙事曲（Ballad）和拉丁爵士（Latin Jazz）等元素，对乔治·格什温的经典《蓝色狂想曲》再次进行了爵士风格重塑。通过精湛的即兴演奏，罗宁将原曲扩展至32分钟的爵士融合版，该专辑于2023年11月由环球音乐/DECCA全球发行。
In 2023, the latest album 'Rhapsody in Blue,' recorded in collaboration with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, represents Luo Ning's profound understanding and aesthetic accumulation of over 20 years in jazz music. It is a particular interpretation and tribute to the centenary of George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue.' In this album, Luo Ning incorporates more modern jazz techniques to reinterpret the work, adding elements of Impressionism, Free Jazz, Jazz Blues, Bebop, Ballad, and Latin Jazz, and once again gives a jazz-style makeover to George Gershwin's classic 'Rhapsody in Blue .'Through exquisite improvisation, Luo Ning extends the original piece to a 32-minute jazz fusion version. The album was released globally by Universal Music/DECCA in November 2023.
2024年由人民音乐出版社的“中国原创音乐作品数字出版平台”出版了《罗宁爵士钢琴作品集》及罗宁改编的《蓝色狂想曲》。
In 2024, “Luo Ning’s Jazz Piano Compositions Collection” and Luo Ning rearranged "Rhapsody in Blue" were published by the "Digital Publishing Platform of Chinese Original Music Works" of People's Music Publishing House.
2025年由四川文艺出版社出版罗宁著作《会跳舞的钢琴-拉丁钢琴入门教程》。
In 2025, Sichuan Literature and Art Publishing House will publish Luo Ning's book "Dancing Piano- Introduction to Latin Jazz Piano."
罗宁是首位在北京国家大剧院音乐厅举办爵士钢琴专场音乐会的中国爵士音乐家，也是在维也纳金色大厅，法国蓬皮杜当代艺术中心演奏的中国爵士音乐家。并先后多次在上海东方艺术中心、广州星海音乐厅、深圳音乐厅、北京音乐厅、香港大会堂、保利剧院、兰州大剧院、珠海大会堂等各大剧院举办专场音乐会。多次参加CCTV音乐节目录制及各省举办的春节联欢晚会，2016年获厦门电视台春节联欢晚会观众喜爱节目一等奖。
Luo Ning was the first Chinese jazz musician who appeared on the stage of the National Center for The Performing Arts in Beijing and kept active on the stages around the world, including the Goldener Saal Wiener Musikvereins, and Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Hongkong City Hall, Poly Theatre, Lanzhou Grand Theatre, Zhuhai City Hall, and other major theaters. And participated multiple times in the recording of CCTV music programs and various provincial Spring Festival Gala events. In 2016, He was also awarded the first prize for the audience's favorite program at the Xiamen TV Spring Festival Gala.
